Wow…my worst class was my first foundations class. They were mostly 14 year old girls who had not adjusted to being in high school. Mind you, this was my first encounter in the public school system as well. I seeked help from the counselor for freshman students which was no help at all. So, I decided to use games and coloring activities related to cosmetology and that helped a lot!

On how to deal with inattentive adult students.
By implementing the WIIFM model closely in my teaching approach.
I learned that it’s ok to ask a student to leave for a moment if they verbally abuse an instructor. While the behavior is rare to nonexistent, it is helpful to know what the options are as a response to that particular behavior.
As a new instructor I was definitely worried more about the students impression of me and not the things that will never happen. I can honestly say I have never been one of the teachers that were listed in the first portion. I do have a good rapport with my students. Enough that they know where I am coming from and have respect for my insight/opinions.
The cheating happens and that is honestly my biggest issue. I have a great rapport with my students but the content is harder than they are used to and often they are unprepared. I have used online monitoring services and blocking sites to help lower some of my repeat offenders.
